About Us

Brathay Trust has been inspiring young people since 1946. Some of those we work with today may be experiencing difficulties in their lives. By engaging with them we inspire them and help in developing their personal and social skills. We also increase their critical awareness and raise their aspirations, which enhance their life chances.

Our Mission

Brathay’s can-do attitude marks them out, and they’re extremely positive people to work with; very energetic.

Our aim is to become a leading charity that inspires children and young people to engage positively in their communities.

We recognise that children and young people face many challenges in their day-to-day lives, and we work with some of the most vulnerable, disengaged and ‘hard-to-reach’, helping them to develop the confidence, motivation, and skills they need to unlock their potential and make positive changes in their lives.

We deliver integrated community and residential programmes, at our Ambleside training HQ, that help young people to re-engage with education, have a voice in their community, become peer mentors and young leaders, and avoid or move away from criminal activity.

Programmes can be delivered in communities via our regional offices across the country. We have undertaken work in London, the Northwest, Yorkshire and Humberside, the Midlands and Cumbria.

We help:

• Young people excluded from school
• Young people not in education, employment or training
• Young offenders and those at risk of offending
• Looked after young people
• Young carers

Results

Our programmes benefit from continuous research and evaluation. Results have included:

• A 78% increase in school attendance.
• 50% of the families on one of our Family Intervention Programmes had their Family Intervention Plan cases closed following the programme.
• 92% of those who participate in our programmes reported positive life changes.

Research

Research and evaluation underpins all that we do. We produce a 500-word report for every programme that we deliver. Working in partnership with those who use our services, academic institutions, individual academics and service providers we  generate knowledge in the areas of education, youth work and management learning.

We provide enhanced impact evaluation, bespoke research, research commissions and young researcher programmes with the aim of influencing practice, and policy at local, regional, national and international level.
